Alice's Story

By: Iris Huang

Alice San, a 16-year-old girl from Burma. She has black hair, black eyes with glasses. She always looks happy and trouble-free. She is lively and likes to make new friends. She wants to go to the university, and she wants to have a pets shop in the future, she likes pet very much. She also likes drawing, she has a part-time job for drawing. After school, she goes to work for 2 hours. She is so enjoying it.

There are 8 people in her family. She has been in USA for one year. She can speak Burmese, Chinese and English. She was afraid when she came to USA. Now, she likes America. But she still wants to go back to visit Burma. When Alice was in Burma, her favorite thing to do was to play with her cats and stay at home to help her mother to sell clothes.

Alice's uncle applied for their immigration to the United States and the family of her mother's is in America. When she first came to America, she felt scared because she could not speak English. She also had no friends. But now, she feels happy because she can speak a little bit English and has many friends from different countries.

Alice likes to eat Burmese food so she will talk about Burmese food. In Burma, the staple food is rice. It is kind of non-sticky rice. However, in Shan States, sticky rice is eaten. In Burma, all the curries are called "Hin." They can point out is that they also called rice and mashed potatoes, "Hin." The curry is not spicy, because it cooks with fewer spices than Indian curry, such as peas and potatoes. Burmese also eat noodles. The main noodle is rice noodles called "Mohinga." It is usually served for social and religions functions. She likes "Mohinga." But Burmese people do not like eat too much.

In Burma, families all live together. In the Burmese families, the fathers or the mothers will go to work, most are the fathers. And the other parents will stay at home and do the housework. In USA, some families do not live together, the parents and the kids live far away. Even if they live together, they can not meet each other, because the parents do have time to take care of their kids. They have to work. They just let the baby sister look their children. These are the differences between Burma and USA.
