Stuck Between Death and Life

By: Katherine Hernandez

Evelyn is 32 years old. She is from El Salvador. She has been in the U.S. for two and a half years. She has two daughters and one son. On December ninth of 2010. She got sick with kidney stones. It made her feel very bad and with a lot of pain. She had fever, pain in her back, headache and vomiting. It was afault. By that time she was pregnant. She had 7 months of pregnancy. Her pregnancy got complicated.

The first day that she went to the hospital the doctor took blood and gave her oxygen. Then doctors checked her heart rate and the baby’s too. But the baby’s heart rate was decreasing so the doctors decided to take him out immediately. They put her in intensive care. Then she was in a room with lots of doctors. She couldn’t understand what they were saying. Then they drugged her and did a surgery to take the baby out.

While they were doing the surgery she had a problem and she was dying. She was not getting enough oxygen. She was not resisting the surgery and when they were taking the baby out she got worse. The baby was fine but she was dying. When they took the baby out them put the baby immediately to the incubator and put tubes on this body. It was bad. She stayed in the surgery room until they settled her and she was better.

When she woke up she saw that she had lots of tubes connected to her body. She wanted to take them out and stand up. But the doctors told her to not move and they tied her up. Then they drugged her again. After 5 hours she woke up again and she saw that she didn’t have all the tubes. She felt bad and hurt because she had wounds all over her body. The doctors told her that the wounds had to be left open until they close by themselves.

The people that helped her during this process were her mother and her daughter. Her daughter helped her the day that she started getting sick. She took her to the hospital and did all the paperwork for her. Also she took care of her sister by herself when she was in the hospital. Her mother helped her by bringing her what she needed and also by checking how the baby was doing everyday.

Evelyn’s life changed after the surgery. She realized that even though she was not a great mom her daughter help her and was with her until she got better. She started to be more involved in her daughter’s live. Also she started to be more sweet and comprehensive. She apologized to her daughters’ and they forgave her. Now they live happily together and with a good health, thanks to this they all can be together and more unite then ever.
